SHARE: the Vision
SHARE, in this project context, has got a double meaning as this word is not only a verb but also an acronym. At first, the sense of the verb has got a lot of significance and even more in the medical research area. Indeed the concept of sharing data thanks to Grids involves also the idea of saving lives by getting better analysis and then more precise diagnosis according to particular or individual cases.
For years the R&D sector has been evolving in this perspective and new technologies, like Internet, allow nowadays researchers and healthcare professionals to exploit data or information in a very fast and efficient way. Medical researchers tend currently to file more and more people personal data, which do not stay only on computer databases or filed in sorters but that can be put also on an international data computing network that allows the data to be analysed and calculated giving at the end a faster and a better solution or better diagnosis according to the case or the person. In other words, a diagnosis that would need months to be concluded would finally be done in hours thanks to an international common basis, which is necessary for this concept of sharing to become reality. However since it might create ethical and legal problems, the SHARE project has been defining strong limits in data use in the name of the right of people integrity and property.
Also, the full designation of this project's name is "Supporting and structuring HealthGrid Activities & Research in Europe: developing a roadmap". This clearly points out the commitment of Europe into Grid's use development.
In both cases, the meaning of the project's name has been reflected in one word, and in this word the vision of the project.
